The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has obtained an arrest warrant for Jalen Carter for his involvement in a fatal car accident in January that caused the death of a University of Georgia football player and a recruiting staffer.

According to a press release issued by the police on Wednesday, Carter is being charged with reckless driving and racing, both of which are misdemeanors and part of the investigation into the crash. According to the police, Carter and LeCroy were engaging in a race-like driving behavior before the crash, and LeCroy’s car was going at a speed of 104 miles per hour, which is more than twice the posted speed limit of 40 mph.

Carter, who is expected to be one of the top picks in the upcoming NFL draft, released a statement on social media on Wednesday, saying that he would return to Georgia to face the charges and ensure that the truth is presented accurately and completely.
