Adriana Lima FIFA: Adriana Lima’s appointment by FIFA draws flak. Here’s what has happened

After naming supermodel Adriana Lima as its first global ambassador of the Women’s World Cup, former FIFA council member Moya Dodd criticized the organization as “tone deaf” and accused it of making the wrong decision, according to reports.

FIFA selected Brazilian model Adriana Lima to “create, promote and participate in many worldwide projects” ahead of the world cup which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.

The former head of FIFA’s task force for women’s football, Dodd, claimed that Lima’s selection is terrible for the game’s marketing and has questioned how she fits into initiatives to transform how people view women in sports.

“Seriously, #FIFA, is this the fan engagement ambassador we need as the @FIFAWWC approaches? #tonedeaf,” Dodd tweeted.

She continued to elaborate on her argument in a lengthy statement posted to her LinkedIn profile. It said, “The world perceives a female differently when she plays football.”

On Monday night in Paris, Lima was on stage announcing the winners of FIFA’s “The Best” awards, which saw an English couple receive prizes in the women’s categories.

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, defended the choice to give the 41-year-old fashion star such a significant position. In a statement released by FIFA, Infantino stated of Adriana, “When you get to meet Adriana, you feel straight away her warmth, generosity, and how approachable and passionate she is about our game.

Notwithstanding such assertions, a review of Lima’s past Twitter postings reveals only one mention of football—the announcement of her new role—and no evidence of the supermodel attending or otherwise participating in football.

Dodd also criticized Lima’s prior statements against abortion, in which she said the procedure is “a crime” in an interview with GQ Magazine from 2006. The model’s publicist then disclosed that her opinion had evolved.

Benita Mersiades, the former head of business relations for Football Australia, also criticized FIFA for being ‘out of touch’ and said that Lima’s position demonstrates that the organization hasn’t changed.
